History & Heritage

Hikurangi is steeped in history, with Māori roots that go back centuries. The area was originally inhabited by the Ngāti Kahu iwi (tribe), and the name “Hikurangi” translates to “the mountain of light,” a name that evokes the importance of the land and its connection to the sky.

From its Māori roots to its days as a thriving community, Hikurangi has a story shaped by gum digging, limestone quarrying, and mining. Though the last coal mine closed in 1971, the township remains vibrant, with strong local spirit and culture.
